DESERT MOUNTAIN VAN-LIFE ADU RETREAT

Van-Life ADU | Desert Mountain Retreat Living

Set on a 20 acre mountaintop property in Ramona, this custom ADU is designed as a modern off-grid retreat that merges architecture with the van-life lifestyle. Constructed from two 40-foot shipping containers and one 20-foot container, the home is organized around an open-concept living space that flows seamlessly onto an expansive wraparound deck.

The ADU includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a dedicated laundry room, storage, and a flexible living area that opens fully to the outdoors. The deck extends the living experience outward, featuring a pool, hot tub, and panoramic views across the surrounding landscape.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the structure incorporates a green roof for natural cooling and solar integration to support an off-grid lifestyle. A key feature of the project is its direct connection to van-life living—allowing a converted Mercedes camper van to pull up alongside the entry deck with full utility hookups for power, water, and sewer. This creates a seamless extension between mobile living and permanent architecture.

Blending prefab container construction, modern ADU design, and experiential outdoor living, this project reimagines what a San Diego County ADU can be—part home, part retreat, and part destination.
